Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior official commented the incident made him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
