Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
