The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
