No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
