RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
